The Watauga County
Democratic Party invited a cross-section of the county’s voters to submit New
Year’s Resolutions for 2008. As always, the diversity of viewpoints and
freshness of perspective speaks well for a representative democracy, and for
the people who call these mountains "home.”
I resolve to continue to work hard to make
our home, state, nation, and world a better place to live, work, and play … Steve
Goss, State Senator
I resolve to buy things locally grown,
locally made, or from local merchants as often as possible … Gerry
Richardson, New River 2 precinct
I resolve to work ever harder for the
Watauga and Ashe County citizens I represent … Cullie
Tarleton, State Representative
In the coming year, I resolve to speak up
more often and more fervently for the principles upon which our Republic was
founded. Restoring our belief in the vision so eloquently expressed in our
Constitution requires all our voices at this very dangerous time. My
hope is that 2008 will be a regenerative turning point in the history of
"this most noble experiment," as Thomas Jefferson called America
… Ron Redmon, Brushy Fork precinct
I resolve, when elected, to provide true and
honest leadership for the people of the 5th Congressional District
and to be the kind of congressman who will always place the needs of the people
above politics … Roy Carter, candidate for Congress, 5th
District
I resolve to work for Democratic candidates
who will address the serious issues facing America in a fair and equitable
way. That means those who will put a halt to the bottomless spending and
destruction in Iraq and Afghanistan and the tax on our children and
grandchildren called the deficit, ensure that no child in America will
go to bed starving and no American will die for lack of access to
medical care, work for a fair immigration policy, and protect the right of all
of our children to an effective education which will make them employable … Sheldon
Hanft, New River 2
I resolve that I will try not to lose my
temper while sitting in Friday, 5 o’clock traffic on King Street. Instead I will turn up the
radio and count my blessings that I am not in Charlotte … Diane Tilson, Watauga
County Democratic Party chair
I resolve to take a different approach when
dealing with controversy -- neither "fight" nor "flight." I
am going to hold the issue in my heart with all of the pain it may cause until
I am able to come up with a more Christian / intelligent / caring solution. In
order to be successful, I will need to listen and totally understand an issue
before I react! … J. Paul Welsh, New River
3
I resolve to work harder for the poor,
disenfranchised, and voiceless in our county and nation, and to hold our elected
officials (Republican and Democrat) accountable for their actions -- and
their inactions -- on behalf of "the least of these." … Marjory
Holder, Blowing Rock precinct
I resolve to pay stricter attention to any civil rights
violations as a result of The USA Patriot Act and to use what rights are left
to us to protest, and to work to elect a reasonable person who actually
believes in the Constitution of the United States. I also resolve to be
more patient with those who don't agree with me, in the hopes of opening their
minds and helping us come together as a country … Judith Banks, Seven
Devils
I resolve to answer all letters and e-mails
from friends and family, along with all the "Take Action" e-mails and
paperwork from assorted organizations. At that point I can be the Most
Organized Person of the Nanosecond before tackling my other resolution – de-clutter
the boxes and files in the basement and garage by February. Sounds like a plan,
eh?! … Donna Duke, Boone 1 precinct
I resolve to work as hard as I can to
promote the progressive movement through my party. I further resolve to
continue my campus outreach to involve young people in charting our future … Richard
Anderson, Deep Gap
I resolve to have the courage of my
convictions and to act accordingly -- most of the time. I resolve to be more
proactive in the things that matter, particularly in the pursuit and
maintenance of friendship … Ruth Laughlin, Meat Camp
I resolve to …
Pray for God to raise up leaders for the United States
who are wise, compassionate, and humble, while I work to replace leaders who
are stupid, unloving, and arrogant.
Pray for and work with political and
religious leaders whose focus is peace among men rather than war -- whose goal
is to convert instruments of war into instruments for peace.
Pray for and work with those who speak for
and practice the best possible stewardship of planet Earth and all its
inhabitants … Herbert Hash Jr., Brushy Fork
