Sen. Barack Obama won the Democratic presidential primary in
Watauga County,
one of two North Carolina
mountain counties that went for Obama (the other was Buncombe Co.). The final Watauga
tally was 4,570 votes for Obama to 3,645 for Hillary Clinton. (Vote totals are
pre-canvass numbers.)
Other Democratic winners in Watauga included Tim Futrelle
who was vying for the Dist. 1 seat on the Watauga County Commission. Because
the Republicans filed no candidate for this office on the November ballot,
Futrelle is assured the seat.
U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan took Watauga with 3,300
votes to second-place finisher Jim Neal (2,291 votes). Fifth Dist. congressional
candidate Roy Carter won Watauga handily over rival Diane Hamby.
Candidate for governor Beverly Perdue easily beat Richard
Moore in Watauga, and lieutenant govenor candidate Walton Dalton came out ahead
of second-place finisher Dan Besse.
In other Council of State races, Beth A. Wood (Auditor) won
Watauga, as did Wayne Goodwin (Commissioner of Insurance), June St. Clair
Atkinson (Superintendent of Public Instruction), and Janet Cowell (Treasurer).
Although Robin Anderson (Commissioner of Labor) won
Watauga, rival Mary Fant Donnan was slightly ahead state-wide, and that race
will likely be decided by a run-off.
