Music, politics and family-friendly activities will meet in an old-fashioned political afternoon for the “Courage America” Concert at Valle Crucis Park on Sept. 19. Democratic candidates for office will be there, ready for voters to shake their hand, look them in the eye, and find out their positions on issues important to Watauga Countians. Music will play all afternoon, from 1-7 p.m., provided by popular local singer-songwriter Tim Smith, the soft reggae sounds of Hope Massive, and the well-known Asheville folk and bluegrass group, The Jamie Tomas Band.

Concert organizer Jasmine ShoShanna says, “The Courage America concert will be a great day to bring a blanket or chairs and spend an afternoon in the park. The goal is to educate citizens about local, state, and national Democratic candidates, as well as inspire involvement in local politics and local issues. There will be time to meet with candidates, and get to know them and talk with them about issues important to you.”

There will be a special children’s area including face painting, and art and music activities. Joe’s Italian Kitchen will be selling deli sandwiches, and the Democratic Women will auction off baked goods, since no political gathering is complete without good food.

Voters will have a chance to meet and talk to Jim Harrell (candidate for U.S. Congress), Jim Cain (candidate for the state Senate), Cullie Tarleton (candidate for the NC House), and all three Democratic candidates for the County Commission - Jim Deal, Winston Kinsey, and Billy Ralph Winkler.

Tickets are $5 (children 12 and under are free) and can be purchased at Democratic Headquarters on King Street, Row by Row bookstore, Fat Cats Music and Video, and Joe’s Italian Kitchen in Boone, and at Skyland Books in Blowing Rock.
