Free Showing of “Where the Lilies Bloom”

April 12, 2011

The 1974 Hollywood production of Where the Lilies Bloom, filmed almost entirely in Watauga County, will be shown at the Watauga County Library on Wednesday, May 4, at 7 p.m. The showing is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

Where the Lilies Bloom was based on Bill & Vera Cleaver’s National Book Award children’s novel. Earl Hamner Jr., famous for The Waltons, wrote the screenplay, and the movie starred Julie Gholson, Harry Dean Stanton, and Jan Smithers. Several Watauga Countians either had parts in the movie or worked on the production, including Bob Cole, who played Hyder Graybeal, and Rev. George Stenhouse, the local Episcopal minister who conducted the movie’s wedding ceremony.

“We particularly want to invite local people who appeared in or worked on this movie, to share their experiences and share memories of the production,” said J.W. Williamson, author of Hillbillyland: What the Movie Did to the Mountains and What the Mountains Did to the Movies, who will be doing an introduction to the film and leading the discussion afterward.

The showing is sponsored by the Watauga County Democratic Party, which will be hosting screenings of other movies made on location in western North Carolina. The Winter People (1989), filmed largely in Avery County, will be shown on May 25 at the Watauga County Library.
