The Watauga County Board of Education began its April 11 meeting on a high note by recognizing Watauga County High School band director Bill Winkler.

Winkler received the Award for Excellence from the Northwestern North Carolina Bandmasters Association at the regional All-State competition at Appalachian State University recently.

His honor was one of several information items the board heard during its meeting.

“This annual award is given by his peers, and he is only the 24th recipient of it,” said Dr. Bobbie Short, the school system’s superintendent. “We want you to know how happy and proud we are of you and this program that you have developed at Watauga High School.

“Thank you for the quality job you do every day.”
Gary Childers, Watauga High School principal, said he and Winkler have known each other for most of their professional careers in Watauga County — a span of more than three decades.

“He is absolutely a dedicated professional and has made a difference in many children’s lives and continues to do that, but beyond that he is respected by the faculty at Watauga High School,” Childers said.

Winkler said he was grateful and humbled to receive the award.

“God blessed me so richly,” he said. “I spent practically every day of my adult life doing what I love to do best with the people that I love the most, including my own children, all of whom were band people just like me.”
