A local chapter of Young Democrats of North Carolina has
organized in Watauga
County, according to Andy
Ball, president of the group. Young Democrats are chartered through the Young
Democrats of North Carolina and is an auxiliary group of both the state
Democratic Party and the Watauga County Democratic Party. As an official
auxillary group, Watauga Young Democrats have a vote on the executive committee
of the local party.
“The past few years have seen
more involvement by young professionals in local politics and in local
government here in Watauga
County,” said president
Andy Ball. “We’ve even had a few young people elected to local offices.”
Formed in 1928, Young Democrats of North Carolina is the
oldest of the Young Democrats clubs in America and was the driving force
behind Young Democrats of America, founded in 1932.
The club is open to registered Democrats between the ages of
18 and 35.
The March 29, 2008, 80th Anniversary Statewide Convention of
Young Democrats set a record for attendance. Guest speakers included Chelsea
Clinton, James Carville, and John Edwards.
In addition to president Andy Ball, other elected officers
in the Watauga chapter include Jeanie Futrelle, vice president; Mariam Willis,
secretary; and Zack Wynne, treasurer.
“We’re looking forward to getting more young people
involved in their community through open dialogue with elected officials and
local service opportunities,” said treasurer Zack Wynne. “We know there is a
lot of excitement in the community about the election this fall, and we want to
provide an avenue for them to be involved.”
The club plans monthly meetings on the second Sunday of each
month, alternating between business meetings and social events. The next
business meeting has been set for Aug. 10, 6:30 p.m., at Café Portofino. The
club is also planning a July 4 cookout open to Democrats of all
ages.
